splat the mat
I love clever interactive product demos. This is a very entertaining one for a car floormat by Yes Essentials: splatthemat.com (not exactly the category you’d expect for smart web creative). This well-dressed, slightly anal-retentive, woman starts talking about her main pet peeve of dirty car interiors. On the floor in front of her is a car mat, and a few images of common stains: ketchup, blueberry pie, coffee with creamer, potting soil, etc. Pretty formulaic so far.
But, then, when you click on one of the images, that substance suddenly pours Nickelodeon-style from the ceiling, completely soaking both her and the car mat. Her reactions are really quite funny (the image to the right is the ice cream sundae). As she storms off the set, these two guys show up and clean the car mat. Copy appears on the screen that they used just a towel and some water, "on-set, on-camera, in real-time".
It’s pretty addictive. You feel sadistically compelled to try each substance (and she heckles you if you leave the screen idle for too long). I like that they were able to bring some personality and fun to the boring old carmat, all without actually losing sight of the product benefit.
